A DAY IN EMMA'S LIFE

Emma is twelve years old. She is a student at a small school in a quiet town. She is from England, but she lives in a town near London with her parents and her younger brother, Jack. Their house is on Green Street. There is a small garden in front of the house, and there are two trees in the garden. Emma's bicycle is in the garage, and her school bag is on a chair near the door.

Emma gets up at seven o'clock every morning. She makes her bed and opens the window. The weather is usually cool in the morning, but Emma likes the fresh air. She goes to the bathroom, washes her face, brushes her teeth, and gets dressed. Her school uniform is blue and white.

At half past seven, Emma goes downstairs. Her mother is in the kitchen. There is some bread on the table, and there are two eggs on a plate. Emma has an egg, some bread, and a glass of milk for breakfast. Her brother Jack doesn't like eggs, so he has cereal and a banana. Their father is usually at work at this time.

Emma leaves home at eight o'clock. She walks to school with Jack because their school is close to their house. On the way to school, they sometimes talk about their lessons. Emma likes English and science, but Jack likes mathematics.

Their first lesson is English. Their teacher is Mrs Brown. She is friendly and helpful. Today, there are some new words on the board. Emma writes the words in her notebook. She listens to the teacher and asks questions when she doesn't understand something.

At ten o'clock, the students have a short break. Emma and her friends are in the school garden. They are talking and laughing. Emma's best friend, Lily, has a new red bicycle. It is next to the school gate. Lily is very happy because her father gives her the bicycle for her birthday.

After the break, Emma has science. The students learn about animals. There is a picture of a dolphin on the board. There are also pictures of a lion, an elephant, and a penguin. Emma thinks the dolphin is more interesting than the lion because dolphins are intelligent and friendly animals.

At twelve o'clock, Emma has lunch with her friends. She has a sandwich and an apple. Her friend Lily has some rice and chicken. They sit at a table near the window. There are many students in the dining hall, but Emma and Lily have a quiet conversation.

In the afternoon, Emma has mathematics and art. She is good at mathematics, but she really enjoys art. Today, she is drawing a picture of her town. There is a river in the picture. There are some houses near the river, and there is a bridge over the water. Emma draws a small park next to the river. She also draws two children on bicycles.

School finishes at three o'clock. Emma walks home with Jack. They are tired, but they are happy. When they arrive home, their mother is preparing dinner in the kitchen. Their father is sitting in the living room. He is reading a book.

Emma puts her school bag on the chair and goes to her room. She does her homework before dinner. She usually studies English for thirty minutes every afternoon. Today, she is learning ten new words. She writes each word in her notebook and makes a sentence with it.

At six o'clock, the family has dinner together. Emma's mother cooks chicken, vegetables, and rice. There is some juice on the table. Emma doesn't drink coffee or tea. She drinks water or juice.

After dinner, Emma helps her mother in the kitchen. Jack watches television in the living room. Emma washes some plates and puts them in the cupboard. Then she goes back to her room.

At seven thirty, Emma calls her grandmother. Her grandmother lives in another city. Emma talks to her for about fifteen minutes. She tells her grandmother about her day at school.

Later, Emma prepares her school bag for the next day. Her English book is in the bag, and her mathematics book is next to it. She checks her timetable because she has science and English tomorrow.

At nine o'clock, Emma takes a shower and puts on her pajamas. She is tired because it is a busy day. Before she goes to bed, she reads a few pages of her book. Her brother is already in bed.

Emma usually goes to sleep at ten o'clock. Tomorrow, she is going to visit her aunt after school. She is going to take her bicycle because her aunt's house is not far from their school. Emma is happy about the visit.

Next Saturday, Emma will meet her friend Lily in the town center. They will go to a small bookshop and then they will have lunch together. Emma thinks it will be a fun day.

Emma likes her daily life because she has a good family, nice friends, and interesting lessons at school. She knows that English is important for her future, so she practices it every day. Sometimes English is difficult, but Emma doesn't give up. She learns new words, makes sentences, asks questions, and tries to speak English whenever she can.

A2 ENGLISH LEVEL CHECK

A New Chapter in Emma’s Life

Emma is sixteen years old and lives in a small town near the sea. She has lived there with her parents and her younger brother, Leo, for almost five years. Before they moved to this town, they lived in a much bigger city. Emma sometimes misses the city because there were more shops, cinemas, and places to visit, but she is happier now because life is quieter.

Every weekday, Emma gets up at half past seven. She usually has breakfast with her family before she goes to school. Her mother makes tea and prepares some bread, cheese, eggs, and fruit. Emma doesn’t eat much in the morning, but she always drinks a glass of milk. Her brother Leo eats much more than she does because he is always hungry.

Emma has been interested in photography for several years. She got her first camera when she was twelve, and since then, she has taken hundreds of photographs. She enjoys taking pictures of nature, old buildings, and people in interesting places. She has already visited many beautiful places in her country, but she has never travelled outside the country.

Last summer, however, something exciting happened. Emma’s school organized a photography project. The students had to take photographs of their town and write short descriptions about them. Emma decided to photograph the old harbour.

She went there early one Saturday morning. The weather was sunny, and there were only a few people near the harbour. Emma walked along the street and looked for an interesting place to take her first photograph. While she was walking, she saw an old fisherman sitting beside a small boat.

“Good morning,” Emma said.

“Good morning,” the man replied. “Are you looking for something?”

“I’m taking photographs for a school project,” Emma explained.

The fisherman smiled and told her that he had worked at the harbour for more than forty years. He showed Emma an old photograph of the harbour. It looked completely different in the past.

“There weren’t many modern buildings here when I was young,” he said. “There were small shops and wooden boats everywhere.”

Emma found his story fascinating. She asked him several questions and took some photographs of him, his boat, and the harbour.

When Emma returned home that afternoon, she was tired but happy. She had taken more than fifty photographs. She showed them to her parents, and they helped her choose the best ones.

Emma then started writing her project. She wanted to describe how the town had changed. She wrote about the old harbour, the new buildings, and the people who worked there.

She spent three days working on the project. She checked every sentence carefully because she wanted everything to be correct. Her brother helped her find some information on the internet, but Emma wrote the project herself.

A week later, she presented her work at school. At first, she was nervous because she didn’t like speaking in front of many people. However, after a few minutes, she became more confident.

Her teacher asked her several questions.

“Have you ever taken photographs professionally?” the teacher asked.

“No, I haven’t,” Emma answered. “But I would like to become a photographer one day.”

“What are you going to do after school?” another student asked.

“I’m going to study art and photography,” Emma replied. “I may also travel to different countries because I want to photograph different cultures.”

Her teacher smiled. “You should continue practising. You have a very good eye for photography.”

Emma was pleased to hear that.

Since that project, Emma has become even more interested in photography. She has joined a small photography club in her town. The club meets twice a month, and its members often go to different places together.

Last month, they visited a village in the mountains. They travelled by bus because the village was too far to walk to. The journey took nearly three hours, but nobody complained because the scenery was beautiful.

When they arrived, they walked around the village and took photographs. Some members photographed the houses, while others photographed the mountains and the local people.

Emma met a woman who was selling handmade bags in a small shop. Emma asked if she could take a photograph of the shop. The woman agreed and told Emma that she had made all the bags herself.

Emma bought a small blue bag because she wanted to support the woman’s work. She paid for it and thanked her.

On the way back, Emma looked through the photographs on her camera. She had taken more than two hundred pictures during the trip.

“I think this is my favourite photograph,” she said to her friend Mia.

Mia looked at the picture.

“It’s beautiful,” she said. “You should enter it in the photography competition next month.”

Emma thought about it.

“I’m not sure,” she said. “There are many talented photographers in the competition.”

“You shouldn’t worry,” Mia replied. “You have improved a lot.”

Emma decided to enter the competition.

Over the next few weeks, she practised every day. She learned how to use different camera settings and watched videos about photography. She also read articles about famous photographers.

Sometimes she made mistakes, but she didn’t give up. She knew that learning something new took time.

One evening, while Emma was studying, her father came into her room.

“You’ve been working for hours,” he said. “You should take a break.”

“I know, Dad,” Emma replied. “I’ll stop in a few minutes.”

Her father looked at the photographs on her desk.

“They’re really good,” he said. “You must be proud of yourself.”

Emma smiled.

“I am, but I still have a lot to learn.”

Her father nodded.

“That’s true. But remember, you don’t have to be perfect. You just have to keep improving.”

Emma remembered those words.

A month later, the photography competition took place. There were many participants, and the judges looked at hundreds of photographs.

Emma waited nervously while the results were announced.

She didn’t win first prize, but she received a special award for creativity.

Emma was surprised and delighted.

She had started taking photographs simply because she enjoyed it. Now she had discovered that her hobby could become something more.

After the competition, Emma decided to make a plan for the future. She is going to continue taking photographs, improve her English, and learn more about different cultures. She would also like to travel one day.

She knows that she may face difficulties in the future, but she believes that she can learn from her mistakes.

Emma looked at her camera and smiled.

“This is only the beginning,” she thought.

Part 10 — FINAL A2 CHALLENGE

Sample Answer

My Life and My Plans for the Future

I have lived in my town for several years, and I really like it. I have studied English for a long time because I want to communicate with people from different countries. I used to spend more time watching television, but now I prefer reading and learning new things. Last year, I started taking more photographs. While I was travelling with my family, I took many pictures. I have already visited several interesting places, but I have never travelled abroad. I am going to improve my English this year. I will also learn more about photography. If I have enough time, I will travel to another country. I would like to visit places that have interesting cultures and beautiful landscapes. I know that I may make mistakes, but I can learn from them. I should practise every day because regular practice helps me improve. I hope I will achieve my goals in the future.
